[1] World Background

INTRODUCTION
The Dragon Gate

It began with the opening of the Dragon Gate - they came through a portal of fire, spat out from deep within the old desert mountains as if rejected from the very stone, awakening once-dead forces in the sleeping volcanoes there. Dragons - teeth like wicked spears, thundering wings beating heavily like wild tempests - crawled out of some hell and into Tur.

First was Belirsiz, the Lord of All Dragons, then there were Aettemrung and Ilis.

As these beasts, utterly immense, hungering, and cunning, took a bloody and murderous claim of the old mountains as their throne in this world, they spoke of a God - their God - of his terrible power, of his great conquests and dominion, and of what would await those that did not prepare for his coming.

Goroth - he was named - the God of War.

With them, came the gift - or, perhaps, the curse - of magic. The Way, cracked open by the unsealing of the Dragon Gate, unleashed a widespread poisoning of the world, tainting countless creatures, people, and things with unnatural arcane powers. Many of these corrupted beings, Tidetouched, were unable to contain their new abilities and the world suddenly plummeted to havoc with whole forests being set afire, lightning erupting from the hands of children, and the rising of the dead. A great fear and panic took the world.

This, however, did not please the Elder Gods. Those still faithful to the Old Religion tried to deny and resist the Taint through great effort - driven to desperation, soon came the Culling, the great attempt to stop the spreading of the arcane affliction, resulting in a mass genocide of those poisoned by these unnatural powers.

They failed.

With the Tidetouched too many in number to continue such ruthlessness, the Culling ended and the Faithful sought other means to control the Taint, begging and pleading to their Gods. They responded swiftly enough - eager to smite these wretched creatures and their chaotic reign over their world, the Elder Gods willed theirAzrul to obliterate the Dragon Lords.

However, there were some that succumbed to the rule of the Dragon Lords, openly embracing them and blindly swearing allegiance to defend their new masters - a great war broke out and when the godly forces of the world crashed together, many perished. Among them was Bruda, who so valiantly sacrificed herself to finally reseal the Dragon Gate. Soon after, the power of the Dragon Lords began to wane and they retreated deep into the fiery heart of the world where no others could follow.

Even with the Dragon Lords defeated, the world would never be the same. Eventually, they would return.

It was only a matter of time.

CHAPTER ONE
Grat's Rising

It began as a rumor, whispers of a threat rising in the east - the greenskin tribes, once known for bloodily raiding, pillaging, raping, and murdering one another, were rallying together, uniting, amassing, under a single name - Grat, they called it, the Heart of the Uk'ura. Orcs and goblins and trolls and ogres were no new threat to the Turan realms, but this was something different - these beasts, once thought moronic and primitive, were organizing in the Lowlands, efficiently and effectively intercepting patrols, butchering unwary bands of travelers, and sacking fortified settlements.

But what was most disturbing of this movement was not of their sudden newfound ability to evade and outflank the Rugnosant armies that pursued them - it was that it seemed to mean something, as if these creatures were driven with some savage purpose. That purpose was finally made clear when the Uk'ura conquered the Holy City of Orgoth, desecrating its sacred temples in the name of the God of War.

The First Crusade, the initial attempt of the Faithful to retake Orgoth, was an utter failure.

With the Second Crusade, lead by Gyrindar and Jopha, came the reclaiming of the city, but at a great cost. The war had taken an immense toll on Orgoth, reduced to utter ruins by the ransacking of the Uk'ura and the ravage of battle. While the city was slowly being rebuilt, the fortress of Kalguru was fortified to ensure Orgoth would not fall again to the Uk'ura forces that had been driven back into the Lowlands at their doorstep.

Though the Holy City now lies in the possession of Rugnos and her people, being delicately restored to its former glory as the Rugnosant armies nurse their wounds, the threat of the Uk'ura remains ever close, undying and enduring.

There is no telling what will come when they decide to strike again.

On stormy nights, some Kalgurian soldiers claim to see dark shapes moving behind the high clouds -
